What You Should Know Before Shopping at Guadeloupe Markets

  What are the best local markets to visit in Guadeloupe?

Here are all our tips before exploring Guadeloupe's markets:

  • Bring cash: while some vendors accept card payments, most only use cash;

  • Arrive early: as everywhere else, the earlier you arrive, the better your chances of finding fresh products while avoiding the crowds;

  • Chat with the locals: markets are meeting places par excellence. Take advantage of your visits to chat with residents and ask them about their work and expertise;

  • Ask permission before photographing: given their colors and the scenes of daily life visible there, Guadeloupe's markets are incredibly photogenic. While most vendors won't mind and will even be proud of their products, it's best to ask permission before photographing stalls and vendors.

You now know where to find Guadeloupe's main markets. You'll see that no single market really stands out from the others since they sell virtually the same products and local specialties. However, they all share one thing in common: they offer a genuine sensory journey to all who visit and guarantee perfect immersion in Creole culture.

Also note that there are many street vendors throughout Guadeloupe. So it's not uncommon to encounter fruit and vegetable sellers or fresh fish vendors on roadsides, or to see a coconut sorbet vendor passing by! Like the markets themselves, street vendors are an integral part of Guadeloupe tradition. Don't hesitate to stop!
