Payment Methods
International credit cards are accepted in most shops. You can withdraw cash from the numerous ATMs operated by banks. However, guesthouses and bed & breakfasts generally accept cash only, just as in mainland France. Banks are normally open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 12 pm and 2:30 pm to 4 pm. Although ATMs are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, take precautions at the start of weekends—and especially before long holiday weekends—by withdrawing enough cash for the period. Before heading to the Guadeloupean islands, make sure you have sufficient funds during your stay on each island, as their ATMs can empty quickly.
Several mainland French guesthouse owners and restaurateurs accept cheque payment. If you wish to use your holiday vouchers, meal vouchers, or restaurant vouchers, certain Guadeloupean establishments can accept them. However, cheques issued by individuals who do not have their bank branch on the island are not accepted.
Cost of Living in Guadeloupe
It is higher than in mainland France, averaging around +12.5%. This is particularly noticeable in the prices of everyday consumer goods, especially dairy products and meat. However, artisanal and local products offer better value. Rum, for example, or even homemade desserts, are rather affordable.
