Looking to discover a destination where nature, history and paradisiacal beaches come together? Searching for a place where every street corner and landscape invites you to escape? Located in the south of Grande-Terre in Guadeloupe, Saint-François is a true gem of the island. Its fishing port, fine sandy beaches and welcoming atmosphere offer you a real change of scenery.
Its History
Saint-François was founded in 1683 by Franciscan missionaries. In 1854, following the abolition of slavery, Indian workers settled in the town.
The history of this commune dates back to the Arawak and Carib Amerindians, who occupied the region between 300 and 1400 AD, as evidenced by excavations at Anse à la Gourde. In 1790, the town had 4,570 inhabitants. Its economy was based on cotton cultivation, exploited by poor white settlers who made extensive use of slavery. In the 19th century, sugar production took over with the boom in sugarcane plantations and factories.
In the 20th century, Saint-François underwent a turning point. The fishing port transformed into a beach resort from 1975 onward, while the hinterland remained dedicated to agriculture, with sugarcane fields and subsistence crops.

A Quick Trip to Saint-Anne
If you must choose a single town to explore the island, opt for Saint-Anne. More lively and centrally located than Saint-François, it allows you to quickly reach all the points of interest on Grande-Terre. With its flat terrain and moderate urbanization, it's also easier to visit than Gosier.
Its exceptional beach makes Saint-Anne the ideal beach resort: tropical atmosphere, brightly colored houses and a charming town to explore.
A Stroll through Gosier and Gosier Island
Head 30 km west of Saint-François to discover Le Gosier. From Anse Tabarin, take a boat to reach Gosier Island in 10 minutes.
If you're visiting for a week, focus on the Riviera du Levant. You'll find everything that makes Guadeloupe charming: turquoise waters, splendid beaches, lively neighborhoods and colorful houses.
Best Time to Visit
Discover this commune from December to April. During this period, the climate is sunny. It's also the ideal time to explore the rest of Guadeloupe and the Caribbean islands.
Renting a Car
Pointe-à-Pitre Airport (PTP) is approximately 40 km from Saint-François. Travel time varies depending on the hour and route chosen, whether through the interior or along the coast. To explore Guadeloupe at your own pace, rent a car.
By Public Transport
Take the Karulis bus company to reach Saint-François from the airport. However, avoid this option if you're short on time as Guadeloupe's public transport network is often slow and subject to delays.
Interurban transport is also reliable and economical for traveling around the island.
